30 Day Book Playlist Challenge -- Day 6: Blues

A Canticle for Leibowitz - Walter M. Miller Jr. The Casual Vacancy - J.K. Rowling Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog - John Grogan Atonement - Ian McEwan The Fault in Our Stars - John Green

Day 6: Name a book that hurt you to read, but was so, so good. (Blues)

- - -

This one surprised me. I couldn't think of ANY off the top of my head because I tend not to read books I know will depress me. I've never been much a Blues girl. But once I went through my shelves, I found several that did indeed destroy me.

A Canticle for Liebowitz scared the EVER LOVING SHIT OUT OF ME and made me have nightmares and be depressed about humanity for weeks. But it is super smart and very well written.

The Casual Vacancy is a great book, if you read it in the right frame of mind. (People looking for Harry Potter happy endings need not apply.) It's capital L literature, and it is bleak as hell. But so well-written. You'll never convince me otherwise.

Marley & Me. Fuck you, the dog dies. Um, spoiler. (The dog always dies, so just shut up already.)

Atonement is a book that practically all of my friends HAAAATE. But I think it's lovely, and McEwan's prose (and characters) break my heart. This is tragic stuff.

The Fault in Our Stars is a book about characters with cancer and yet I read it anyway, because it's not a Cancer Book and because I happen to think John Green is The Shit. But I cried for an hour after finishing this, and it was the middle of the night, and it was awful.

I realize I am probably cheating on this playlist by picking so many books but I don't care I can do what I want.
