Little Women

Little Women - Louisa May Alcott

This was my first time reading Little Women even though I've read it countless times before and seen the movie. That makes no sense, right? Wrong.

As a kid, I received a box set of those Children's Great Illustrated Classics, and Little Women was among them (as was The Swiss Family Robinson, Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, Oliver Twist, and Great Expectations). Let me tell you, the real thing is much different. The illustrated version of Little Women is ridiculously melodramatic because it's accompanied by these over the top, extremely over-dramatized illustrations on every page. Totally out there. The GIC takes all the good out of the story and completely dumbs it down. I dug up my copy over Christmas and looked through it, and I have to say, my favorite has to be the illustration of Jo shaking the hell out of Amy. Priceless.
